New Zealand Bound

New Zealand

“What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm?

An idea. Resilient…highly contagious.

Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed – fully understood – that sticks; right in there somewhere.”

When I worked for the sailing company in Maui, once of my coworkers was a guy named Nate. He had just spent nine months living in New Zealand, a place I knew nothing about. Every time we worked together, he would tell me how awesome New Zealand was. He said it was the most beautiful place in the world. Looking around, it was hard for me to believe there could be a more beautiful place than Maui! The seed was planted, though. An idea that stuck.

Four years later, my desire to travel and live in New Zealand still stands. In fact, hardly a day has gone by where I haven’t dreamed of going there. I’m excited to say that, Lord willing, I am finally going! On October 5th, I will board a plane that will take me through Los Angeles and Fiji to Auckland, New Zealand.

Inevitably, there are questions.

  • What?!?!?
  • Why are you going to New Zealand?
  • How long are you going for?
  • What are you going to do there?
  • Do you know anyone there?
  • What about 9 Fruits?
  • Are you going by yourself?

Officially, I am taking a leave of absence from working and living in Nashville. I am going to New Zealand to live and work and experience everything it has to offer. I could try to explain why, but this video will do a much better job:

Seriously, who wouldn’t want to go there?

I am so excited to embark on this journey and feel extremely blessed just to have this opportunity. I am very confident that the 9 Fruits team will carry on well in my stead, and I will be pulling for the continued success of our business. The length of my trip will depend on many things. My working visa will allow me to stay for up to twelve months, but I will need to find work consistently in order to support myself for that long.

I will miss all of my family and friends here dearly. I consider myself to be one of most fortunate people I know, and I’ve truly been blessed with so many wonderful people and opportunities over the past few years.

Looking forward, my blog is hopefully about to get rocked with the pictures and stories of my adventures. Please subscribe or bookmark this blog if you’d like to follow along. While I’m gone, your prayers would be so appreciated. Going to a foreign country all alone is a risky venture indeed, but I know that God will be with me wherever I go.

Well that’s it. It’s time, I’m ready, I’m going.

Joe Newton, I miss you sir! I did re-read some of the 40 Days of Purpose book. I think I read what I needed to hear. Thanks for the comment and words of encouragement. I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well. I’ll be back in California next June, so save me a slot in your schedule.
